Timur Turlov said earlier this year that FIDE would hold another General Assembly before 2026 ended, and he has now put a date on it. In an invitation published on October 26, FIDE announced an Extraordinary General Assembly for December 27 at 14:30 CET, held online. It will be the first full gathering of the federation's delegates since the vote that made him president.
What the invitation says
Turlov convened the meeting in line with a decision of the FIDE Council. His stated reason is to address matters still outstanding after the Samarkand General Assembly, complete that work and take the decisions needed for FIDE's continued functioning and development. Invitations go to delegates and representatives of affiliated organizations, along with zonal council members, commission chairs, the current World Champion and Women's World Champion, management and advisory board members and other officials.
The agenda is not part of the invitation. FIDE says the full agenda and supporting documents will be circulated by November 27, a month before the meeting. The access link and technical instructions will follow. The page does not describe voting procedures, quorum or registration deadlines.
What was left over from Samarkand
The Samarkand assembly on September 26 and 27 did leave a short list of unfinished business. According to FIDE's published decisions, an online Extraordinary General Assembly was to be held in late 2026 to review the 2027 budget and a provisional 2028 budget, which the Council is to prepare. That is the clearest link to this meeting, though the invitation itself does not mention the budget by name.
Other items from Samarkand were also still open when those decisions were published. Four nominees for Honorary Vice-President were awaiting Council approval. The 2030 Olympiad was provisionally placed in Qatar, subject to guarantees, with Georgia as the fallback. A Chess960 rating system had been approved, with a deadline of June 1, 2027 for implementation. Whether any of these will be on the December agenda is not yet known.
Why it matters
The timing is notable. The meeting falls just before the new year, while Turlov's leadership team is still settling in and while the Court of Arbitration for Sport appeal over his eligibility has no announced timetable. The invitation says nothing about that appeal, and nothing in the material reviewed suggests it is on the agenda.
