Carlsen Beats Caruana To Win Freestyle Chess World Championship

Sun, 15 Feb 2026

Magnus Carlsen won the FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship in Weissenhaus, Germany, defeating Fabiano Caruana in the final to claim his 21st world title.

Magnus Carlsen won the FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship in Weissenhaus, Germany, held February 13–15. A draw in the fourth and final game against Fabiano Caruana was enough to seal a 2.5–1.5 match victory. The win extended Carlsen's dominance of the format he has championed since 2022, and marked his 21st world title across all disciplines. Nodirbek Abdusattorov reached the field through the event's play-in stage.Freestyle Chess, played with randomized starting positions rather than the standard opening array, was designed to reduce the influence of pre-game opening preparation and push players back toward calculating over the board from the first move. Carlsen has been its most visible advocate and its most successful competitor since the format's inception. The tour, co-founded by Carlsen and German entrepreneur Jan Henric Buettner, has grown into a fixture on the elite calendar since its debut Grand Slam events, with Chess.com now serving as a broadcast and promotional partner across the full Grand Slam Tour. The Weissenhaus venue, Schloss Weissenhaus in Wangels, has hosted Freestyle events in back-to-back years; last year's Grand Slam leg at the same venue was won by Vincent Keymer, with Caruana runner-up and Carlsen finishing third — a result this year's final reversed.
