Grand Chess Tour Unveils 2026 Field, $2 Million Prize Fund
Tue, 27 Jan 2026
The 2026 Grand Chess Tour will run six events from May to August with a combined $2 million purse, headlined by the Superbet Chess Classic in Romania.
Organizers announced the full 2026 Grand Chess Tour field on January 27, confirming a six-event schedule running from May through August with a combined prize fund of $2 million — the largest in the tour's history. The calendar opens with Super Rapid & Blitz in Warsaw (May 3–10), followed by the Superbet Chess Classic in Romania (May 12–24, worth $475,000 on its own), Super Rapid & Blitz in Croatia (June 29–July 6), and a Saint Louis doubleheader of Rapid & Blitz (July 31–August 7) and the Sinquefield Cup (August 8–21). The top four players after five events advance to the Tour Finals in Saint Louis, August 21–28, with each Rapid & Blitz leg carrying a $200,000 purse. The field mixes tour regulars with new additions; organizers pointed to Javokhir Sindarov and Jorden van Foreest stepping in as full-season players for the first time. World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju is also among the confirmed participants, giving the tour a marquee draw independent of the classical world championship cycle running in parallel this year. The prize fund increase continues a multi-year trend of rising purses across elite chess, which organizers have credited to expanding sponsorship interest and a broader push to professionalize the circuit's business side. The tour's finals format — cutting the field to four players after five qualifying events — remains unchanged for 2026, rewarding consistency across formats rather than a single strong result.
