Istanbul Will Host the 2026 World Rapid and Blitz Championships Through December 30, With Carlsen Defending Two Titles
The year's biggest rapid and blitz party now has an address. FIDE has announced that the World Rapid and Blitz Championships will be held in Istanbul, filling the last blank on a calendar that had been missing both a host and a date. Players and fans can now plan the final week of 2026 around the Bosphorus.
What FIDE has confirmed
According to the announcement, the championships will run in the final week of the year, with arrivals on December 25 and play continuing through December 30. FIDE's text gives no separate rapid and blitz schedule, so the day-by-day program is still to come. Four world titles will be decided: open rapid, open blitz, women's rapid and women's blitz. FIDE says hundreds of players from around the world are expected.
Much is still unannounced. The official venue within Istanbul is to be published shortly, and registration details will follow later. The announcement does not give a prize fund, time controls or qualification rules.
A familiar slot, and a familiar stage for Istanbul
The dates keep the event in its traditional end-of-year slot. The 2025 championships in Doha were played from December 26 to 30, according to U.S. Chess. Istanbul brings its own history: it hosted the 40th Chess Olympiad in 2012, and FIDE notes that it also staged the World Youth Blitz and Rapid Championships at the end of 2025. The announcement singles out two young Turkish players, Yağız Kaan Erdoğmuş and Ediz Gürel, as local names to watch.
The champions who return
Magnus Carlsen arrives as the double defending champion. In Doha he won the open rapid with 10½/13, a full point clear of the field, and then took the blitz title by beating Nodirbek Abdusattorov 2½-1½ in the final of the knockout, winning the last game after losing the first. Aleksandra Goryachkina won the women's rapid on tiebreaks over Zhu Jiner, and Bibisara Assaubayeva won the women's blitz by beating Anna Muzychuk by the same 2½-1½ margin after three draws.
Whether the 2026 format matches Doha's is not confirmed. In 2025, according to U.S. Chess, the open blitz used a 19-round Swiss before the knockout and the women's blitz a 15-round Swiss.
Sponsorship and ownership
FIDE names Freedom Holding Corp. as title sponsor. The company has been FIDE's strategic partner since 2023, and under a 2026 agreement it also supports the Candidates, the World Championship match, chess training centers, school programs and talent scouting. FIDE President Timur Turlov, who was quoted welcoming the event and thanking the Turkish Chess Federation and its partners, founded and leads Freedom Holding, which also bought ChessBase in April 2026.
What to watch for
The next pieces of news will be the venue, the schedule and the prize fund. Until then, the date is the headline: FIDE's announcement does not say who has entered, but if Carlsen plays he will be going for a repeat of his Doha double, and the women's champions will be looking to hold on to their crowns too.
