Rosenstein Responds to Accusations

Rosenstein has answered the sanctions accusations in detail, and no finding has been reported. Allegations are not evidence, and his complaint deserves an answer.
Reputations in modern sport are rarely lost in courtrooms. They are lost in headlines, and they tend to stay lost long after the headlines are forgotten. That is worth remembering as Wadim Rosenstein answers in public a string of accusations about sanctions and Russia that have followed him through the campaign. He has answered them in detail. What the coverage has not produced is a finding against him.
Allegation is not evidence
Start with what is on the record. The accusations come from Ukrainian media reports, an opinion column and later pieces that Rosenstein says appeared in paid English-language outlets. They allege sanctions evasion, supplies of military-use products and acting as a Russian influence agent. The coverage reviewed reports no court ruling, no sanctions designation and no regulator's decision against him or his companies. In a fair system that matters a great deal.
His answers are specific. He says he does not manage VR Rus and takes no dividends, and that an external administrator runs it while a Russian government commission controls whether he can leave. He says WR Group banned business with Russia and fulfilled its earlier contracts under EU law. He dates the NOVATEK logistics work to 2019 through 2021 and says it ended in 2021. The point I find most telling is his challenge that no article names a specific deal, product or sanctions-list entry. If that is accurate, it is a fair question for anyone making a sanctions claim to answer.
A complaint does not expire with the vote
Losing by 25 votes does not make a concern about process less valid. Rosenstein argues that Turlov and a figure the reports call Malcolm Payne breached Article 9.7 of the electoral regulations, which he says bars collusion or manipulation of the vote, and he has filed complaints with the Ethics Commission. Whatever one thinks of his chances, that is what ethics bodies are for. The reports contain no reply from Turlov or FIDE, and a public answer would help everyone.
There is also a consistency point. Rosenstein has argued before that if sanctions are used to restrict participation in FIDE bodies, the same standard should apply to all. Turlov is under Ukrainian sanctions, and that fact cannot simply be set aside. A rule is only a rule if it is applied evenly.
The wider mess
The Podolyak affair adds to the sense that the new administration has work to do. The Chess Federation of Ukraine says it never authorized Mykhailo Podolyak to represent it, and the European Chess Union board, meeting in Budva on October 23, is reported to have unanimously backed the Ukrainian federation. That is not Rosenstein's spin. It is a continental body and a national federation objecting on their own account.
What would help
None of this is a clean bill of health, and I am not offering one. The claims on both sides remain unverified in the coverage reviewed. But Rosenstein is a businessman whose WR Group has organized chess events and partnered with FIDE itself, and who then ran for the top job, and he has so far been judged more in the press than in any forum that can call witnesses. If he publishes the documents behind his statements, he strengthens his own case. And if FIDE's Ethics Commission tells the public what it is examining and when it will rule, everyone, including his critics, gets the thing the sport needs most: an answer that does not depend on whose media is louder.
