Grand Chess Tour Heads Into Summer Stretch With Olympiad, Title Match Looming

With the Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz and Sinquefield Cup ahead, the Grand Chess Tour's summer swing sets up a packed back half of the year: a September Olympiad in Samarkand and a November world title match.
The Grand Chess Tour heads into its final stretch this week, with the Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz opening July 31 and the Sinquefield Cup following from August 8 to 21. The top four finishers after five events advance to the Tour Finals, also in Saint Louis, from August 21 to 28.The Saint Louis leg arrives with its own subplot: Maxime Vachier-Lagrave withdrew from the rival Esports World Cup earlier this month specifically to honor his Grand Chess Tour commitments, after a February open letter from seven top players warning organizers the two calendars had become impossible to reconcile. The tour's summer swing sets up a crowded back half of the year. The 46th Chess Olympiad opens in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, on September 15, doubling as the venue for FIDE's presidential election — a vote that has turned into a genuine four-way contest between incumbent Arkady Dvorkovich, reform candidate Wadim Rosenstein, former president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, and Freestyle Chess founder Jan Henric Buettner. Two months after the Olympiad, Gukesh Dommaraju defends his world title against Javokhir Sindarov in a match scheduled for November 23 to December 17 — a host city still to be announced as of late July. For a sport that spent much of the past year debating faster time controls, streaming rights, and a federation election shadowed by EU sanctions proceedings against its own sitting president, the next five months bring the questions back to the board: who wins in Samarkand, who leads FIDE afterward, and who's champion in December.
