Budapest To Host Pilot Event For New Total Chess World Championship Tour

A FIDE-approved format testing players across Blitz, Rapid, and Fast Classic in one event will debut in Budapest in November, ahead of a full season starting in 2027.
A new global championship format will hold its pilot event in Budapest this November: the Total Chess World Championship Tour, which tests players across three time controls — Blitz, Rapid, and Fast Classic — in a single competition, with cumulative scores across all three deciding the winner. The pilot runs November 10–21 at Budapest's Anantara New York Palace Hotel and is expected to draw much of the sport's elite, including world number one Magnus Carlsen. The format was created by Norway Chess and has FIDE approval, positioning it as an officially sanctioned complement to, rather than a rival of, the existing world championship structure.Organizers say the Budapest event will use the same regulations and prize structure planned for a full inaugural season beginning in March 2027, when multiple tournaments across host cities will culminate in crowning FIDE's first World Combined Champion — a new title distinct from the classical world championship Gukesh Dommaraju currently holds. The format's creators have pitched it as a response to long-running debates over which time control best identifies the sport's most complete player, arguing that rewarding versatility across Blitz, Rapid, and Fast Classic produces a more meaningful measure of overall strength than any single format alone. The Budapest pilot arrives within days of the existing World Championship match between Gukesh and Javokhir Sindarov, giving the sport two high-profile global title events in close succession for the first time — a proximity organizers describe as coincidental.
